Phase Field Computations of Single-Needle Crystals, Crystal Growth, and Motion by Mean Curvature
The phase field model for free boundaries consists of a system of parabolic differential equations in which the variables represent a phase (or "order") parameter and temperature respectively. The parameters in the equations are related directly to the physical observables including the interfacial width c which we can regard as a free parameter in computation. The phase field equations can be ...
متن کاملNonlinear Analysis of Flow-induced Vibration in Fluid-conveying Structures using Differential Transformation Method with Cosine-Aftertreatment Technique
In this work, analytical solutions are provided to the nonlinear equations arising in thermal and flow-induced vibration in fluid-conveying structures using Galerkin-differential transformation method with cosine aftertreatment technique. From the analysis, it was established that increase of the length and aspect ratio of the fluid-conveying structures result in decrease the nonlinear vibratio...
متن کاملAn investigation of non-planar austenite–martensite interfaces
Motivated by experimental observations on CuAlNi single crystals, we present a theoretical investigation of non-planar austenite-martensite interfaces. Our analysis is based on the nonlinear elasticity model for martensitic transformations and we show that, under suitable assumptions on the lattice parameters, non-planar interfaces are possible, in particular for transitions with cubic austenite.
متن کاملTime-Lapse, in Situ Imaging of Ice Crystal Growth Using Confocal Microscopy
Ice crystals nucleate and grow when a water solution is cooled below its freezing point. The growth velocities and morphologies of the ice crystals depend on many parameters, such as the temperature of ice growth, the melting temperature, and the interactions of solutes with the growing crystals. Three types of morphologies may appear: dendritic, cellular (or fingerlike), or the faceted equilib...
متن کاملSimulation of faceted film growth in three dimensions: microstructure, morphology and texture
We present the results of a series of simulations of the growth of polycrystalline, faceted films in three spatial dimensions. The simulations are based upon the assumptions of the well known van der Drift model in which the growth rate of each surface is fixed only by its crystallographic orientation. The simulation method is based upon the level-set formalism and the only input are the relati...
